It is important to understand the creative power of our words and the way they shape our lives. However, let us explore how the mind and the mouth are connected, in order to understand this concept more simply.
Everyone goes through different situations over the course of a day. These situations are then interpreted and turned into thoughts. The thoughts are transformed into emotions, which eventually influence your behavior. Now, since our emotions are so powerful, we often don’t spend enough time processing them, making it easy for our feelings to control us. As a result, we start saying things we justify because we believe we have every right to do so.
Now, we tend to label this kind of behavior as “venting” and “getting things off our chest”. But, what we’re really doing is “whining”, “complaining” and annoying everyone around us (including ourselves at times). What we fail to realize is that while we are speaking without thinking, we are actually inviting more unwanted crap into our lives without ever realizing our words are shaping our lives. Think about it for a moment. Have you ever complained about a situation over and over again, only to find the problem has gotten even bigger? You would probably say YES. Well, so have I.
So, how do you fix this? And I’m not referring to the the “name it, claim it” craze that everybody is talking about these days. Not that I think it’s a horrible idea, I just understand there is more to it than that. I’m referencing something more powerful… and it works every time. It’s called Faith.
The bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that “The tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit”. In laymen’s terms, your mouth has the power to bring forth life or death in any situation, so be mindful of the way you speak, the next time you feel overwhelmed by your emotions. As we learn to mix our faith with Jesus’ words, we are able to surrender and allow Him to dictate the course of our lives, based on what he teaches us in the scriptures.
Remember, God knows what He is doing 100% of the time. We simply must trust Him and allow the power of HIS words to be the creative force in our minds, thoughts, actions, and words, which is absolutely necessary for changing our circumstances. This holds true regardless of the situation you are in.
In doing so, we are more likely to process our emotions less impulsively, change the perception of our situation, and approach it differently, which drastically influences the positive outcome of an event. Most importantly, it can help eliminate mental health issues like anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, and other unwanted symptoms that often steals our joy.
Now, I’d like you to take a minute and evaluate how you’ve been talking about your past, present, and future. Evaluate what you’ve been saying about yourself specifically. Have you been calling yourself a failure? Telling yourself that you’re never going to get that job or promotion? Are you reminding yourself about all the mistakes you’ve made in the past? Are you saying horrible things about your children, relationships, career, health, finances, and spouse? Are you speaking life over it or death?
If you’ve recognized that you have been speaking death over your situation, STOP. Honor your emotions but don’t let them dominate you or your mouth. Simply, start believing what Proverbs 18:21 says and begin speaking His words over your situation. No matter how difficult a situation may appear, we ultimately have the power to change the path of our lives by making a few simple changes.
So, THINK AGAIN the next time you want to “vent” and instead learn how to stay in a place of grace, considering all of your blessings.
