We hear so much about the benefits of self-care and how fabulous it is supposed to make you feel.   But here’s the thing…our ideas about self-care are usually influenced by the lifestyles of the rich and famous in Hollywood and have tainted our views about how we should actually practice self-care.

So, today I’m going to teach you a few techniques about how to self-care for FREE!  Because let’s face it, most of us can’t afford to fly off to the Maldives Islands on a private jet.  At least not yet any way (wink, wink).  So, until we reach that point in our lives, let’s just keep self-care simple, fun, and cost-effective.

Number 1: Self-care should not involve anything or anyone that is going to stress you out.  For those of you who spend a lot of time with drama filled friends, people who never seem happy (and expect you to carry their burdens) or overly complaining family members…This is NOT SELF-CARE and will actually end up making your feel worse.  So, as you are practicing self-care be sure to surround yourself with healthy people who increase peace and joy in your life.  Or better yet, use this time to love on yourself alone.  For example, take a walk or find a nice quiet place to relax and read a good book.

Number 2: Make your emotional self-care a priority.  Simply start by taking inventory on your “triggers” or things that causes you to experience negative thoughts and emotions that don’t feel good.  This is done by listening to your inner voice and becoming more aware of influences that increases strong emotions that leaves you feeling depleted emotionally.  For example, if you’re drawn to TV shows that are full of crime, murder, and controversy you may start to notice that you’re more easily consumed with feelings of fear, anger, and suspicion. So please choose wisely what you take into your ears, eyes, and spirits since all of it, negative or positive has a direct effect on your mood and behavior.

Number 3:  Engage in healthy and joyful activities inside your home.  For example, soak in a nice hot bath after everyone is asleep to avoid any interruptions.  Try adding some music, candles, and incense to create a spa like vibe and make it last, no rushing necessary.   In this way, you will be placing your mind and body in a state of relaxation, which will cause you to have a better night’s sleep and improve your energy for the next day.

So, give these tips a try today because, self-care is the key to maintaining good relationships with yourself and others.  And, if you’re having trouble finding time to practice self-care, put it on your calendar like a doctor’s appointment.  Label it as IMPORTANT so that you’re not tempted to cancel it.

Also, remember that this is a process so be kind to yourself until it becomes a new habit.
